Abstract
Recent investigations into karst caves on Haida Gwaii and northern Vancouver Island are providing significant new information as to the early post-glacial paleoecology of the BC coast and hints as to human use of the landscape. In Haida Gwaii three caves show evidence of bear hunting, at 11,000 to 10,000 BP, and a contemporary fauna. On northern Vancouver Island preliminary work at Pellucidar Cave has recovered a number of extirpated species dating from 13,000 to 10,000 BP. These data, together with 43 palynology and geomorphology are helping to better understand the ancient landscape of the BC coast and inform research directions to address the challenges of detecting pre-Holocene human occupation.
