Abstract
High-resolution stratigraphic study of the Below Forks archaeological site has revealed key changes in the depositional regime and contextual placement of this Plains prehistoric site over the 2,000 + year duration of human activities there. Using reconnaissance geomorphological data from other sites along the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers, the Below Forks site can be placed in its unique setting during a time of important environmental changes. Other archaeological and geological sites along the Saskatchewan River have provided modern analogues for the development of highly rich organic horizons at the site. The future implementation of both traditional geoarchaeological techniques and multiple proxy data as well as high-resolution techniques such as infrared spectrometry and soil micromorphology will also be discussed.
