Abstract
During the summer 2001, SCAPE project geoarchaeologists conducted a reconnaissance survey of soils and geomorphological contextual data from archaeological sites along the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers in the vicinity of Prince Albert and Kinistino, Saskatchewan. The archaeological sites provide a relative chronological framework for the changing sedimentary regime and landscape changes occurring during the middle to late Holocene. Archaeological remains and soils preserved at these sites provide proxy records of the changing nature of the Holocene fluvial environment. Because these archaeological sites preserve the remains of human behavior, they also provide an indication of the response of human groups to the changing late Holocene environment. The use of multiple proxies and the recognition of the importance of facies changes in the archaeological and fluvial stratigraphic records set the stage for a unique interdisciplinary methodological framework. This paper will discuss the results of the reconnaissance survey in the context of previous fluvial geomorphic studies of the Saskatchewan River and the importance of high-resolution interdisciplinary studies for understanding the environmental context in which prehistoric Plains groups developed.
