Abstract
The potential impacts of a CO2-induced climatic warming on the physical, biophysical and socio-economic systems in Arctic Canada were the focus of a Canadian Climate Program Workshop, held March 3-5, 1986 at Geneva Park, Lake Couchiching, Ontario. The intent of the workshop was threefold: first, to develop a program of impact studies based on expected changes in the climate of northern Canada; second, to define what sorts of climate data the Atmospheric Environment Service (AES) should be providing to support these impact studies; and third, to promote interest in arctic impact studies and to act as a forum for interaction between researchers. While there is as yet no final agreement on the detailed scenarios for the future climate of northern Canada, the general consensus was that there will be a general warming which will have varied and diverse impacts of a physical, biophysical and socio-economic nature. Research strategies and policies needto be adopted in the next decade which minimize potentially adverse impacts and maximize potentially beneficial impacts.
