Abstract
1978 saw the publication of a virtual deluge of permafrost related papers in connection with the activities of the international permafrost community. It is the opinion of this writer that periglacial geomorphology is part of that community. Moreover, a periglacial geomorphology divorced from that community will be limited in scope, probably to climatic and environmental reconstructions (Palaeogeography) and the study of alpine frost action phenomena. ... the future growth of periglacial geomorphology lies in the more applied aspects of the cold, non-glacial regions of high latitudes. During the 1980s we must anticipate the continued growth of field and laboratory studies of permafrost related processes. At the same time practical applications, such as permafrost terrain sensitivity mapping, or terrain disturbance studies, to name but two, will assume increasing importance. All these trends may lead to the growth of a branch of geomorphology more appropriately termed permafrost geomorphology rather than periglacial geomorphology.
