Abstract
The move into a new decade provides an excuse here for speculation as to future trends and developments in periglacial geomorphology. To do this, it is necessary to characterize progress during the past decade and place the developments of the 1970s in their historical perspective. ... In summary ... the 1970s saw periglacial geomorphology discard the image of a rather outdated branch of climatic geomorphology and become a rigorous branch of quantitative geomorphology. Within this context, events of the last few years suggest that the next decade in North America will see periglacial geomorphology dominated by applied research and permafrost-related problems. Central to this assumption is the search for energy, particularly hydrocarbons, in Arctic North America, which shows every sign of increasing in intensity and urgency. Already, several trends can be seen emerging from the recent literature. Three of these are highlighted in this review.
