Abstract
Potential for the greatest environmental problems is associated with the drilling operation itself, particularly in deep exploratory drilling. The disposal of toxic waste drilling fluids is a problem. Also, as more drilling extends through into the summer months terrain damage will inevitably occur since, at many High Arctic localities, there is a lack of gravel to form pads upon which such operations are conducted. ... The problems of Canadian oil and gas exploration activity appear more critical than those currently being experienced on the Alaskan North Slope.
