Abstract
Snow avalanches and their geomorphic effects have been studied in the Lake Louise area of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Data are presented for avalanche frequency in the late-spring through summer and diurnal periods. In the course of a year, avalanches occur widely in the area but the presence of distinctive geomorphic features above tree line suggests that they are most effective as geomorphic agents in areas devoid of vegetation. Avalanches carry rock material of assorted sizes on a variety of debris slopes including avalanche boulder tongues of the fan and roadbank types. In addition to the form and sedimentology of these features, the presence of debris tails on their surfaces also indicates avalanche activity.
