Abstract
Observations of two snow avalanches indicate that their erosive effects are highly specific and cannot be readily generalized. One full-depth, wet snow avalanche moving over snowfree and thawed debris surfaces had no erosional impact. This effect was the result of a protective veneer of wet snow deposited by the avalanche as it moved over the ground. The other example which occurred in apparently similar snow and terrain conditions produced measureable erosive effects. These observations suggest that care must be taken when inferring or assuming avalanche erosion processes in interpretation of landforms and deposits.
