Abstract
Changes in global hydrological variables of pristine basins could be indicative of climate change. In this study, we applied Bayesian procedures to: 1) detect the presence of a shift in the value of the mean annual discharge, the minimum annual discharge, and the maximum annual discharge of Canadian RHBN stations, and 2) detect the presence of a shift in the variance of the mean annual discharge. In addition, we performed a Pettitt test on the mean annual flow data to identify shifts in the mean. Bayesian analysis results indicate that for 33 stations, a shift in the mean annual discharge is present. For 62 stations there is a shift in the value of the minimum annual discharge, and for 37 stations there is a shift in the maximum annual flow. Our testsindicate that variance of the mean annual flow has changed for only two RHBN stations. In addition, it can be argued that respectively 39, 40, 31, and 4 stations also show signs of possible non-stationarity for the previous variables. Results for the Pettitt test show that for 13 series, there is a shift in the mean annual discharge. Mapping of the results shows regional trends in the behaviour of these variables. Stations located in the same areas are affected by similar trends in the timing, magnitude, and type of change.
