Abstract
A relict foredune plain is comprised of a series of shore-parallel dune ridges built seaward by progradation. The morphologies of three Holocene relict foredune plains in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence are compared and contrasted. Les Sillons (Dune du Sud) and Dune du Havre aux Basques are located on Iles de la Madeleine, Quebec; Basin Head is at the eastern end of Prince Edward Island. Plan morphology of the plains was interpreted from aerial photographs, and surface cross-sectional morphology was measured by conducting profile surveys. Although closest in proximity, Les Sillons and Dune du Havre aux Basques, are morphologically dissimilar in both plan and cross-section. There is greater morphological similarity between Les Sillons and Basin Head despite wider spatial separation. Based on the similarities and differences in the morphology of these relict foredune plains, it is speculated that the development of Dune du Havre aux Basques began prior to both Les Sillons and Basin Head during a trough in post-glacial relative sea level, and that the local geomorphological setting allowed this earlier development to take place. Further study of these features may help to understand
