Abstract
Pioneer vegetation is described from recently formed moraines near the Clachnacudainn Snowfield, Selkirk Mountains, British Columbia. The altitudinal range of sample sites is from 6, 700 - 7, 650 ft. which is considerably higher than most pioneer vegetation sites examined elsewhere. Colonization of moraines is considered to be taking place by chance dispersal of propagules from adjacent vegetation. Although 55 species were found in pioneer vegetation, many were reported from only single sample sites. Among the species which play a prominent part in colonization of moraines are Epilobium latifolium, Carex nigricans, and Antennaria alpina. The Clachnacudainn sites are compared briefly with others of a similar nature elsewhere in western North America.
