Abstract
Studies carried out over the last three years indicate Ontario's approximate 1130 km of shoreline on James and Hudson Bays consist of 85-90% salt or brackish marsh ecosystems, with the rest of the area occupied by river mouth and high-energy beach features. Geomorphological features controlling the extent of such salt marshes include recent storm beach ridges, relict beach ridges, and ice-related processes during spring break-up. The salt marshes are extremely important waterfowl and shorebird habitat.
