Abstract
In this paper, characteristics of the freezing of water in porous materials are reviewed and examples given of the effects of frost action. The thermodynamic basis for the explanation of ice segregation is given and the possible role of spreading and disjoining pressures is described. A criterion for the initiation of ice lenses is presented. Brief consideration is given to the question of whether equilibrium can ever be attained under natural conditions.
