Abstract
The Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development is responsible for management of aggregate resources in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, which includes about 40% of Canada's land area, and for the adjacent offshore areas. In these areas, relatively greater quantities of construction materials are usually required due to the presence of permafrost and muskeg, the absence of transportation networks commonly limits access to sources of supply, and their remoteness may limit the use of alternative engineering and construction methods that require lesser quantities or lower qualities of earth fills. There are presently shortages of high quality aggregates in many regions of the North. The Land Management Division, Natural Resources and Economic Development Branch is developing a granular resources inventory and management program in support of this portion of the departmental mandate. Detailed geotechnical information will be combined with environmental and social considerations and modern legislation to effectively manage this limited resource. This paper identifies a number of problems affecting northern granular resources inventory and management and offers some suggestions for future discussion or research. (Au)
