Abstract
A short intense rainstorm on June 25, 2004, resulted in flooding andlandslides in an area burned in the 2003 Cedar Hills Fire, 12 km east of Falkland, BC. Some 50 small gullies failed along a 2.5 km section of severelyburned, south-facing concave slope and deposited debris on the lower slopes [Photos 1 and 2]. Highway 97 was blocked by debrisand sediment for an hour and one car was damaged. Three (3) residences were impacted by debris and floods, and sediment was deposited into the Salmon River. An investigation was initiated by the Ministry of Forests to examine the event and determine if fireguard rehabilitation activities or postfire salvage harvesting influenced the event. Short and long term residual hazards based on the investigation are presented.
