Abstract
A method to map the albedo and net shortwave radiation field of a mountain glacier on a pixel-by-pixel basis is proposed. The method employs the irradiance values calculated from a spectrally based radiative transfer model incorporated in the LOWTRAN-6 code, the upward spectral radiance values measured from the Landsat-5 TM, and information on the topography extracted from a digital elevation model. The analysis was performed for September 2, 1988 during the 13 hr of sunlight received on the Athabasca Glacier basin in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It is shown that the irradiance values are accurately modeled within 10 percent of the radiation values acquired from a field pyranometer. The calculated glacial surface-cover reflectance and albedo values compare favorably to published information, whereas the measured surface brightness temperature is well within the expected range of values.
