Abstract

Field studies on south-west coast of Ungava Bay. Empirical observations on thaw development are presented and discussed for six soil and vegetational groups in context of surface and subsurface thermal properties. Simple empirical model for predicting active-layer development in each terrain type, based on thawing index, is presented, and its various limitations are discussed. Possibilities of using model to make regional and temporal extrapolations of active-layer thickness are considered
