Abstract
Rabbitkettle Hotsprings, at the north end of Nahanni National Park Reserve, Northwest Territories, are in the southern part of the Mackenzie Mountain Fold Belt. Calcium-carbonate-saturated waters discharge from four springs at the site: three of them are actively building two spectacular travertine-terrace structures. The spring waters were investigated in terms of their chemistries and environmental isotopes. This information, in conjunction with field observations, geomorphology and a general understanding of the local geology, was used to provide an understanding of the subsurface flow system. Chemical and isotopic compositions of both old and modern travertine deposited at the site have provided information about the environment of deposition. Natural forms of degradation such as frost damage, river damage and animal traffic have had a considerable impact on the structures at the site. With an increase in tourism, humans have also had an impact. As a result of this study, a detailed monitoring program to observe and anticipate all forms of degradation has been designed
