Abstract
High lake levels, often related to winter storm events, can result in severe shoreline erosion. Landowners may construct protective measures without considering the geomorphic processes and inadvertently destroy much of the natural shoreline. In response to resident’s concerns the shoreline erosion potential of Horne Lake on Vancouver Island was mapped, incorporating a suite geomorphic features and processes. Prescriptions for erosion protection were given in the form of a conceptual toolbox that considered both the necessary protection for infrastructure, explicitly linked to each of the hazard rating levels, as well as the preservation of the integrity of the lake.
