Abstract
Numerous boreholes have been drilled in the St Lawrence Lowland for the purposes of detecting the presence ofnatural gas and to set up the regional Quaternary stratigraphy. Since the recovery of most of the samples is composed of cuttings, the lithological and sedimentological features are nor preserved and cannot be used as stratigraphic indicators. A new stratigraphic correlation tool based on the relative depositional age is proposed using IRSL. This study shows that a luminescence parameter (R-l), defined as the ratio of increase of luminescence upon added dose, can discriminate sediments of different age and be used as a correlation tool insedimentary basin analysis. This approach has been rested on sediments collected along river sections, continuous drill cores and cuttings. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
