Abstract
Archaeologists have long pondered the significance of the White River ash event on the aboriginal inhabitants of southern Yukon ca.1200 years ago. Most archaeological sites lack the stratigraphic control or temporal resolution to adequately address this question. However, excellent preservation of organic artifacts in alpine ice patches provides a unique opportunity to observe changing patterns in the archaeological record over short periods of time. The new data indicates that the period in question was one of rapid technological change characterized by the introduction of bow and arrow technology, the fluorescence of antler technology and an apparent reduced importance of lithic technology. This paper examines the possible correlations between this change in the archaeological record and the ash fall.
