Abstract
The restoration of valley systems involves managing changes to an ecosystem which is extremely complex and temporally variable. Natural channel designs are a key component in developing naturalization concepts. The practical constraints of most restoration projects, in both time and resources, limits our ability to comprehend this complex system and develop specific objectives. This is compounded, especially in urban environments, by the changes taking place within a watershed before, during and after the project. To give some guidance to a project, generalizations are used to describe processes, and assumptions are made based upon this as to the desirability of the results. Many times these are, or appear to be, value ladened assumptions. This paper discusses the rationale for some of these generalizations and assumptions, and gives examples of projects which have been monitored to assess their success in achieving the expected results. It is intended to further the discussion of the rationale for naturalization andnatural channel design and to begin to improve our ability to predict the expected results of restoration projects.
