Abstract
The characteristics of debris flows along the Slims River valley, St. Elias Range, are very similar to those reported for debris flows at lower latitudes. Volume, thickness on fan, and viscosity of the flows are highly variable at all latitudes. Mean velocity and peak discharges are similar in most cases. Water content and solid content of the flowing material are typical of the classic debris flows. The basic difference in the flows lies in the source of the water, which may be supplied by thawing of ground ice in warm weather, instead of always being the result of heavy rainfall events.
