Abstract
The thickness of the active layer is probably one of the most important parameters in the successful design of foundations in permafrost areas, but there have been few systematic studies of its variability under natural conditions. ... this paper explores the effects of varying thicknesses of (Of) horizon on the thickness of the active layer on both alpine and polar permafrost, by examining data from two sites, one near Kluane Lake, St. Elias Mountains, Yukon Territory and one at Inuvik, Northwest Territories.
