Abstract
Dendroglaciological investigations were conducted at Surprise Glacier in thenorthwestern British Columbia Coast Mountains in 2003 and 2004. Tree-ring analyses of samples from living trees (Abies lasiocarpa, Tsuga mertensiana) and detrital wood located within/below a prominent lateral moraine provide insight into the late-Holocene activity of Surprise Glacier. Radiocarbon dating and tree-ring crossdating indicate advances at ca. 3000 14C YPB (Tiedemann Advance), ca. 1600 14C YBP (Bridge Advance) and during the Little Ice Age. Findings confirm the timing of late-Holocene glacier activity emerging from other regions in the British Columbia Coast Mountains and provide the basis for developing an annually resolved tree-ring and glacial advance chronology potentially spanning the last 3000 years.
